È stata svelata in occasione di un’allegra serata di gala, svoltasi presso il Rosewood Hotel di Hong Kong lo scorso 18 luglio, la classifica de The Asia's 50 Best Bars 2023. La cerimonia è stata il primo incontro senza restrizioni per la comunità bar in Asia dal 2019 e, altro aspetto rilevante, tutti i locali asiatici inclusi nella top 50 erano presenti. L'attesissimo conto alla rovescia ha visto la partecipazione di cocktail bar di 17 città, con il Coa di Hong Kong che si è piazzato al primo posto per il terzo anno consecutivo (in fondo all'articolo la classfica completa). Una tripletta con la quale Coa sta creando una vera e propria dinastia, che ricorda le 4 vittorie consecutive (2012-2015) dell’Artesian London nella classifica globale dei World’s 50 Best Bars.
Fondato nel 2017 dal bartender e proprietario Jay Khan, il nome Coa si ispira all’attrezzo utilizzato per la raccolta dell'agave. Non a caso il locale vanta un'impressionante collezione di 200 bottiglie di tequila, mezcal e altri liquori messicani a base di agave. Jay Khan, insieme ad Ajit Gurung, ha sfruttato il successo del cocktail bar per lanciare di recente, e proprio nei pressi del Coa, il Savory Project, locale che propone cocktail artigianali a base di ingredienti insoliti, con particolare attenzione alle note salate e umami.
«Siamo felicissimi di essere a Hong Kong per celebrare la vibrante comunità dei bar asiatici in occasione del primo evento dei 50 Best in questa città dove si mangia e si beve alla grande – ha commentato Mark Sansom, content director di Asia's 50 Best Bars -. I locali asiatici continuano a spingersi oltre i limiti quando si tratta di esperienze di consumo favolose e questo è evidente dal talento e dalla creatività che mostrano i bar della lista di quest'anno. Il primato di Singapore
Singapore è ancora una volta il primo paese asiatico con 11 bar in classifica, tra i quali il Jigger & Pony che si è classificato secondo, aggiudicandosi il premio Rémy Martin Legend of the List, dopo essersi piazzato al primo posto assoluto nel 2020. Grande fautore dei prodotti locali e sostenibili, Vijay Mudaliarg è stato il protagonista della classifica, con l’Analogue Initiative piazzatosi al 15° posto e il Native bar rientrato nella lista alla 42a posizione. Inoltre, Analogue si è aggiudicato l'ambito Ketel One Sustainable Bar Award, una vittoria meritata per un bar dalla filosofia green, con un menu a base vegetale e un imponente bancone stampato in 3D da bottiglie di plastica riciclate.
Veterano della scena dei bar di Singapore, il Night Hawk di Peter Chua (n. 73 in classifica) è stato insignito del Campari One To Watch Award ed è considerato un locale dal potenziale per entrare nella lista dei primi 50 in futuro. Dall’atmosfera intima, con 22 posti a sedere, ha conquistato i clienti con i suoi sontuosi cocktail d'autore e un ambiente perfetto per la conversazione.
Altri locali premiati
Altri bar che hanno colpito sono stati lo Zest di Seoul, che ha scalato ben 43 posizioni posizionandosi al 5° posto, conquistando così il Nikka Highest Climber Award e il titolo di Best Bar in Korea. Il Virtù di Tokyo, che ha debuttato in classifica al 20° posto, aggiudicandosi il premio Disaronno Highest New Entry. Gestito dal beniamino del settore Keith Motsi, ex Charles H Seoul, Virtù è il cocktail lounge del Four Seasons Otemachi, che abbina aperitivi e liquori francesi a shochu e whisky giapponesi. E se vi state chiedendo perché il vostro bar locale ha finito la Chartreuse, potete ringraziare Keith, che ha fatto scorta di oltre 200 bottiglie del liquore alle erbe francese.
Gli italiani in classifica
L'Italia è stata ben rappresentata nella lista degli Asia's 50 Best Bars, con l'assistant group beverage director Giovanni Graziadei del Jigger & Pony di Singapore che si è aggiudicato il secondo posto per il terzo anno consecutivo. Anche se il team di Jigger & Pony sarà deluso per l'ennesimo secondo posto, potrà guardare al prossimo ottobre, quando Singapore ospiterà per la prima volta la cerimonia dei World's 50 Best Bars.
L'Argo, all'interno del Four Seasons di Hong Kong, si è piazzato all'ottavo posto: a guidarlo il bar manager Federico Balzarini, che di recente ha sostituito Lorenzo Antinori, che ha appena aperto il suo progetto indipendente Bar Leone, un'ode ai bar italiani d'epoca. Al nono posto l'elegante Darkside di Hong Kong guidato dal bar manager Simone Rossi e situato proprio nell'hotel Rosewood che ha ospitato la serata di gala.
Ma i bartender italiani sono stati protagonisti anche di diversi eventi in città, con Benjamin Cavagna del 1930 Milano che è apparso al Testina, bar ristorante che ha come consulente chef Diego Rossi del Trippa di Milano. Patrick Pistolesi del Drink Kong di Roma ha servito cocktail al Bar Leone. Giacomo Giannotti del Paradiso di Barcellona, vincitore di The World's 50 Best Bars 2022 (leggi L’Italia e gli italiani fanno fiesta ai World’s 50 Best Bars 2022), ha fatto da guest bartender al Darkside, mentre Tommaso Cecca e Saverio Casella del Camparino di Milano sono stati ospiti del Vista Bar, Simone Caporale del Sips and Boadas è stato dietro la cloche del leggendario Quinary e Andrea Minarelli dello spettacolare Bulgari Tokyo, di nuova apertura, ha miscelato i drink al Bar De Luxe.
Appuntamento a Singapore
L'Asia continuerà a far parlare di sé in occasione della serata di premiazione dei World's 50 Best Bar, che andrà in scena a Singapore presso la centrale elettrica di Pasir Panjang Power Station il prossimo 17 ottobre, la sua prima volta in Asia. Mark Sansom ha espresso grande entusiasmo per questa prossima tappa: «Siamo entusiasti di portare la comunità dei World's 50 Best Bars a Singapore, la nostra prima incursione al di fuori dell'Europa e l'opportunità di celebrare un anno magnifico per i cocktail bar e i bartender in una delle migliori città del mondo per i cocktail».

Lots of Italy at Asia's 50 Best Bars 2023
The Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2023 was announced at a fun-filled gala at the Rosewood Hotel in Hong Kong on 18 July. The ceremony was the first zero-restriction gathering of the bar community in Asia since 2019 and impressively, every one of Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2023 were in attendance. The highly anticipated countdown featured bars from 17 cities across Asia with local favorite Coa of Hong Kong taking top spot for the third year running. With its threepeat in Asia’s 50 Best Bars, Coa is working towards a dynasty, reminiscent of The Artesian London’s 4 straight victories (2012-2015) in The World’s 50 Best Bars. Established in 2017 by bartender-owner Jay Khan, Coa’s name is inspired by the agave harvesting tool and has an impressive collection of 200 bottles of tequila, mezcal, and other agave-based Mexican spirits. Jay Khan, together with Ajit Gurung, have leveraged the success of Coa to recently launch the nearby Savory Project, a bar with craft cocktails that feature unusual ingredients with an emphasis on savory and umami notes.

The primacy of Singapore
Singapore once again is the leading Asian country with 11 bars on the list, including Jigger & Pony ranking No.2, clinching the Rémy Martin Legend of the List Award, having placed first overall in 2020. A proponent of local and sustainable products, Singapore’s Vijay Mudaliar was the talk of this year’s list with Analogue Initiative ranking 15th and Native bar re-entering at No.42. In addition, Analogue was awarded the coveted Ketel One Sustainable Bar Award, a well-deserved win for the environmentally friendly bar having a plant-based menu and impressive bar counter 3D printed from recycled plastic bottles. A veteran on the Singapore bar scene, Peter Chua's Night Hawk (No.73 on the 51-100 list) was named the Campari One To Watch Award, seen as a venue with the potential to break into the 1-50 list in the future. The intimate 22-seat Night Hawk has wowed customers with sumptuous signature cocktails and an ideal environment for sparking up conversations.

Other bars to make waves were Zest, which climbed an astonishing 43 spots to place the Seoul-based bar at No.5 and with this, taking the Nikka Highest Climber Award as well as The Best Bar in Korea. Making its debut on the list at No.20 is Virtù in Tokyo, winning the Disaronno Highest New Entry Award. Managed by industry darling Keith Motsi, formerly of Charles H Seoul, Virtù is cocktail lounge at the Four Seasons Otemachi, that marries French aperitifs and liqueurs with Japanese shochu and whisky. And if you’re wondering why your local bar has run out of Chartreuse, you can thank Keith for that, who has stockpiled over 200 bottles of the French herbal liqueur.
Italians in the rankings
Italy was well represented on the list of Asia’s 50 Best Bars, with Assistant Group Beverage Director Giovanni Graziadei of Jigger & Pony Singapore claiming 2nd spot for the third consecutive year. Although the team at Jigger & Pony will be disappointed to finish runner up once again, they can look forward to October 2023, when Singapore will host the World’s 50 Best Bars for the first time. Meanwhile 8th place Argo within the Four Seasons Hong Kong was captained by bar manager Federico Balzarini, who recently took over the reins from Lorenzo Antinori, having just opened his own independent project Bar Leone, an ode to vintage Italian bars. In 9th position, bar manager Simone Rossi runs the slick bar Darkside, located in the very Rosewood hotel that hosted this year’s gala. With events around town, Italians made a strong showing with 1930 Milano’s Benjamin Cavagna appearing at Testina, a restaurant bar consulted by Diego Rossi of Trippa Milano. There was also Drink Kong Rome’s Patrick Pistolesi serving drinks at the Roman-themed Bar Leone. Meanwhile, Giacomo Giannotti of Paradiso Barcelona, the winner of The World’s 50 Best Bars 2022, guest bartended at Darkside, while Tommaso Cecca and Saverio Casella of Camparino Milano were hosted by Vista Bar, Simone Caporale of Sips and Boadas was behind the stick at the legendary Quinary, and Andrea Minarelli of spectacular new opening Bulgari Tokyo mixed drinks at Bar De Luxe.
Appointment in Singapore
Asia will continue to be the talking point at the next World’s 50 Best Bars, to be unveiled in Singapore at the Pasir Panjang power station on 17 October 2023, marking the first time in the awards’ history the ceremony will be held in Asia. Mark Sansom expressed his excitement about the next stop for the 50 Best Bars: «We are thrilled to bring The World’s 50 Best Bars community to Singapore, our first foray outside Europe and an opportunity to celebrate a magnificent year for bars and bartenders in one of the world’s finest cocktail cities».
